Pregnancy and Chiropractic

Can pregnant women get help from chiropractic care? Pregnancy can be a time of joy and exciting anticipation, yet for some the experience is coloured by pain, discomfort and illness. This is often because pregnant women undergo many structural and hormonal changes that affect the spine, nerves, joints, ligaments, connective tissues, center of gravity and stability.

The Doctor of Chiropractic can ensure that the spinal column, pelvis and related structures are balanced, moving easily and free of vertebral subluxations. Being free of vertebral subluxations means the mother can experience pregnancy at a greater level of comfort, health and vitality and is better able to handle the stress of childbirth.

Since nearly all drugs and medication can cause fetal damage or malformations, it is important for the pregnant women to avoid them as much as possible. A drugless approach to having a proper working body pays off and the mother and child have a better chance at good health.

There are so many things pregnant women worry about: staying pregnant; carrying the baby to full term; morning sickness; the baby developing normally; backaches; leg pain and if their labour will be safe and easy. With proper spinal care, pregnancy and the birthing process are helped in a number of ways. Chiropractic has been performing spinal adjustments on pregnant women for over a hundred years and the research has shown that chiropractic spinal corrective care may help maintain pregnancy, control vomiting during pregnancy, deliver full-term infants with ease and produce healthier infants. There is even research showing that postpartum depression is a rarity in women who have received chiropractic care.

So, can chiropractors help pregnant women? Absolutely!
